Isaac nudged me awake while holding his phone up. The screen showed a live call with Kota’s face above the name, “Lucky Bastard.” I grinned and took the phone from him.

“Hey.”

“Hey. How are you feeling?”

“Tired, but my head has stopped pounding,” I said.

“We should have done more shared power exercises. I’m sorry for not preparing you for that,” Kota said.

“Oh, please. We only had a couple of months. From what Gil says, I’ve learned a lot more than he expected.”

“Long drive, huh?”

“Long, boring drive. I suppose we will stop each night to rest.”

“I’ll threaten Isaac. I’m sure he will try something stupid with you.”

“He will not. Isaac is harmless. Mostly,” I replied.

“You underestimate me,” Isaac said without looking back at me.

“He’s right. You do. He’s pretty damn charming. I might just fall for him,” Kota responded.

“Can I watch?” I asked.

“Wow! Kink much, Ashcraft?” Kota teased.

“Hell, yeah you can watch,” Isaac responded.

“Okay, this conversation is getting out of hand,” I said.

“Take care. Please call me occasionally so I don’t worry myself to death. Oh, and Brax says hi,” Kota said with a huff at the end.

“Tell him I said hello. Don’t worry about us. We will be back in Georgia soon,” I replied.

“I love you, Lacey.”

“Love you, too.”

“Aw, so sweet,” Isaac said as I handed him his phone back. I rolled my eyes at him then curled back up with his blanket. I’d never been so exhausted in my whole life.

Occasionally, I would wake up to hear Isaac and Grant talking about baseball or computer stuff. Grant’s hacking skills impressed me. For someone to get into airport security and shut down surveillance he had to be highly intelligent. Most of the hack he executed from his watch. Isaac seemed to be perpetually happy, which I knew had to be a front. I’d lived that life. Putting on a happy face when my parents died. Going on with life. It sucked, but it was expected of me. I already had a strong connection to Isaac, but I wanted him to know he didn’t always have to be that way with me.

The vehicle lurched to a stop and Culpepper announced, “Alright. We are at this department store. Stay together. Get in and pick up a few things you need, then get out.”

“Show me the money,” Isaac said, holding his hand out. Culpepper placed a credit card in his hand. “What’s my limit?”

“Just what you need,” Culpepper said with a grin.

“I need a lot of things, but I’m pretty sure that Lady Lola’s Dancing Girls won’t look good on your credit statement,” Isaac said.

“Give me that,” I said, snatching it out of his hand. “You should know better.” I gave Culpepper a questioning look but he laughed it off.

Isaac linked his arm in mine as we walked through the parking lot. I heard the click of a phone behind us. Grant held up his phone. “Evidence,” he said, showing us the picture of us from behind. “Poor Dakota. This one is going to hurt.”
